I’ve been a frequent rider of the 69 bus, which traverses Vanderbilt Avenue, for the past 2 years. The section between Grand Army Plaza and Atlantic Avenue in Prospect Heights is constantly evolving. There’s an interesting mixture of old and new–a faded ad for Brooklyn BBQ is painted on the side of a building right next to a tiny French cafe. It’s a beautiful, brownstone-y stretch of blocks, and one ripe for visiting. Next time you’re in the area, get off the bus and take a stroll.
If you start walking Vanderbilt from Grand Army Plaza, you’ll quickly hit Joyce, a cute bakery slash coffee shop between Park Place and Prospect Place that’s been open for about a year. Great for hanging out, playing a board game, and reading.
Le Gamin, located at 556 Vanderbilt, is also worth a stop. It’s a tiny French cafe with a pretty garden in the back. Rumor has it the French toast is excellent, and there’s a huge selection of both sweet and savory crepes. Prices are reasonable, but not dirt cheap.
If you take your walk at dusk, you might be thinking stiff drink rather than almond croissant. If that’s the case, check out Soda Bar. The dimly lit former soda fountain boasts a stocked juke box, greasy polish snacks, and lots of comfortable seating. I’ve found it a good place to come with groups, as there’s usually space to get 5 or 6 huddled around a coffee table. The vibe is hip but relaxed. Find Soda Bar at 629 Vanderbilt.
Another Vanderbilt evening option is Beast. It’s a little pricey, but for a special occasion the tapas and romantic atmosphere are worth it. There are two cozy rooms and outdoor seating along side an iron fence. If dinner’s not in the cards, drop by for wine, beer, and dessert. After 11pm, a selection of Brooklyn beers are just $3 a pint. Located at Vanderbilt and Bergen.
In addition to all of these dining options, Vanderbilt is also home to a selection of shops. There’s a Met supermarket (making this a great neighborhood to live in), a wine store, and a few clothing boutiques. I’ve never allowed myself to actually go inside of any of them (no need for temptation), but if anyone has anything to report, please comment!
